In 1962, Richard Booth established his first bookshop in the small Welsh market town of Hay-on-Wye. Booth, and others following his example, would go on to make a name for Hay as the world’s first book town.
The bookshop arrived at its current home at 44 Lion Street in the early eighties. Formerly a builder’s merchants, the shop now houses three storeys of new and secondhand books, as well as a café, a cinema and a studio space.
We host literary events, including writing workshops, in the bookshop and run a monthly book club. We still buy and sell secondhand books, trading with collectors and booksellers all over the world, and Richard Booth’s Bookshop continues to be a cornerstone of Wales’ cultural landscape and of the international literary community.
